Hey Jonathan, I read that anxiety and depression are the top mental illnesses in the United States. Nearly 1 in 5 Americans suffers from some form of mental illness.
Mental illness, in general, is prevalent to a large extent almost everywhere in the world, not just the United States. Pretty much everyone is suffering from a mental illness they are probably not aware of.
I would agree that depression and anxiety are the biggest two. I recently saw an article that says that at any given time about 7% of Americans meet criteria for depression. That's about 7x more than for schizophrenia or intellectual disability.

I think the biggest mental health problem in the US is the emotional distress. Especially now with everything that is happening with the virus
I think depression might be the biggest because it is the most common.
