In the past 5 or 10 years, we have seen an extremely unfortunate rise in the crime rate among teenagers and young adults. What can be the biggest contributing factor to this?
Since the 1980s, crime has actually been decreasing overall. However, after the start of COVID in 2020, we have begun to see an increase in some violent crimes, and a decrease in non-violent crimes. Researchers are starting to look into the causes for this change.
However, majority of crimes have always been committed by young adults/teenagers and people actually begin to desist from crime at around age 20. This is known as the age-crime curve pictured below.
There are many reasons for this group committing more crime including low self-control, criminal peers, and undeveloped brains, among other things. By mid-twenties, less people commit crime because they may have more social-ties like relationships, children, marriage, and steady careers.
Mental illnesses increased too. Nowadays it is started to be seen in much younger population. Stress is a big part of this too. I also agree with Ayesha.
Teenagers got free access to Internet without any parental supervision from the very young age. They try to implement what they see on screen. There is another reason too most of them are just scared and lost and they don't know what to do; in order to fit in, teenagers do what they think is cool.
The major contributing factors to teenage crimes include peer pressure, poor education, poor socioeconomic status, substance abuse, and neglectful parents. However, the biggest contributing factor is peer pressure, because teenagers are more likely to engage in risky or violent manners when they are in groups.
