Here are some of the Myths associated with therapy. Mental disorder plays an important role in our life but if we look around us many people have a negative concept of them. There are many people who are actually suffering from these mental disorders but they tend to avoid or delay the treatment or therapy for this and the reason behind this is the stigma or discrimination that has been attached to the people who are suffering from any mental illness
Myth#1
If I go to therapy, I’m admitting that “I’m crazy” or “mentally ill”
Myth#2
People who are weak talk to therapists and we should try to solve our own problems.
Myth#3
If I start therapy, I will have to go for the rest of my life.
Myth#4
Therapy is expensive.
Myth#5
If I go to therapy I have to tell my therapist all my deep dark secrets.
Myth#6
Therapy is unnecessary when you can just talk to a good friend or a family member.
Thanks for sharing these common myths.
It's a tragedy when a person in need of psychological help believes or has treatment delayed because of these factors.
When I was in my 20s I was often worried about seeking help from mental health services due to a mistaken view that I would be considered weak or unreliable because of this need.
I also like your myth #6 there is definitely no substitue for a trained listener and observer. That's not to say family and friends don't play a kep part in maintaining the mental health of those close to them, but there is world of difference between hearing and listening. And one of the benefits of being a qualified therapist is understanding this difference.
Thanks again for sharing.
Hopefully posts like this can reassure people that seeking help from a therapist is not a shameful act and quite the opposite can be a great and productive step in recovering.
