Daniel shared a great review that gives some really important implications of what's been going on and how it affected our mental health for these past 2 years.
There is a damage for sure, the question is: "what can we do about it?"
And I believe that we need a much higher consciousness and connectedness on this topic, on a global level, in order to minimize this damage as much as we can and learn how to better cope with the consequences.
This is a really important question. There have been a number of attempts to quantify the damge done to mental health.
I found a epidemological review which I think can help us understand things as they happen. This review is from 2020 so really useful.
There is a line from this review which I think is extremely thought-proviking:
"The current evidence suggests that a psychiatric epidemic is cooccurring with the COVID-19 pandemic, which necessitates the attention of the global health community."
The review posts evidence from other reviews for instance (Hossain, Md Mahbub et al 2020) which showed that isolation and quarantine measures which are unavoidable in a serious case of infection - leads to low self-esteem, mood disorders, insomnia, PTSD, avoiding crowds or socialising even after quarantine has ended.
Moreover, the effect on healthcare providers has been especially pernicious. Often having to work overtime, experienced higher levels of stress and depression.
I'll leave it there, but take a look at the review it's incredibly revealing.
