I recently bought a little book on psychology to learn a little more and I came across this quote from Abraham Maslow:
"If the only tool you have is a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail."
How true do you think this is? I think it makes a really good point about how our perspectives influence how we combat problems or how sometimes we take part in self fulfilling prophecies.
Oh amazing! Thank you guys for sharing these quotes and for your replies. I love these and I like the new ways of looking at things.
A wonderful quote it reminds me of an idea i once read called a "Man with a Hammer” Syndrome.
“Man with a Hammer” syndrome is the idea that if you only have one or two mental models in your head, you’ll approach all your problems with the same solution.
Amazing quote, I think we do get locked into one way of thinking to solve a problem. I was a long time follower of a website that focused on different techniques to keep your mind sharp...one of these ways was to 'adopt a genius' and it meant think of someone of whom you think a lot of like Da Vinci or Marie Curie. The idea is that when you had a problem try to imagine how they would go about solving the problem. For instance, Marie Curie was a rigourous scientist and chemist so her approach would he far different than Da Vinci's approach as an artist and engineer. The 'adopt a genius' therefore is one way to try and beat treating everything in the same way. Thanks for sharing love that quote.
Beautiful quote. It really gives insight about the psychology of human beings. How things influenced our behavior. If you are prepared and have proper tools you can solve problems.
It reminds of Einstein, he said that "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.”
I think it's a great quote! We do employ the tools we have to deal with the problems life throws at us, and in that way yes- I do think it alters our perceptions or at very least perception of how to handle things.
