I managed to find a 2019 systematic review which helps us understand the nuance of this link.
Generally the crimes are designed to recoup losses and/or hide debts from family members etc
The crimes themselves are typically non-violent and include embezzlement, fraud etc
The prevalence of crime in gambling addiction is apparently farily difficult to ascertain though some researchers (Blaszczynskiand McConaghy, 1994, as cited in Adolphe et al, 2018) have given it a fairly good go. Their research indicated about 59% of the participants in the study having committed at least one gambling-related offense against property.
Correlation between gambling addiction and crime is not easy to understand. Yes, gambling addiction can leads to committing crimes. But other factors play their parts too like substance abuse , financial un- stability and etc. According to studies ,more than two- third gambling addictives report committing crimes directly related to gambling.
