Forensic psychiatry focuses on the biology of the brain as it applies to the criminal justice system. Forensic psychiatrists are medical doctors. Forensic psychiatrists are called on to provide information related to the use of psychiatric medicine or to perform psychiatric evaluations.
Forensic psychiatrist might be called in to do psych evaluations on a person suspected of having a mental health disorder that may have been one of the main reasons they engaged in crime. They are able to report someone's mental state at the time of the crime and determine if they would be qualified for "Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity" (NGI). They also are able to prescribe medications (something a forensis psychologist cannot usually do) to the patient and work with them to manage their disorder.
