When a child grows up and suffers from maltreatment at the hands of a caregiver or parent, they have a possibility of "acting out" in adulthood. That being said, if an adult suffers from maltreatment as a child and commits a crime, do you think it is a possibility for them to be released after committing a crime with the promise to attend therapy to fix underlying issues? (Not based on an actual case that I have come across as yet, just curious after researching the topic.)

I think that childhood trauma is a big problem when it comes to future development of mental illness and wrong behaviors. Unfortunately, I don't see many solutions besides perhaps schools offering counseling and therapy to those individuals. But then again, they might not be aware of their troubles, especially at such a young age, or the trauma might not have surfaced at that point.
Unfortunately, most of the time justice system don't see mental illness as a real illness. If someone committed crime due to their childhood trauma, they are surely going to serve.
But some time Serial killers are also victims of parental neglect , so what do you think? Should they not be persecuted of their crimes? It's all about perspective.
