Thanks for sharing the article, Ayesha. I was wondering whether you’ve heard about the Rashomon effect?
Named after Akira Kurosawa’s 1950 film Rashomon (which I highly recommend), The Rashomon effect describes how parties can describe an event in a different and contradictory manner that often reflects their subjective interpretation rather than the objective truth.
It’s quite a fascinating subject, so if you want to read some more, I’m attaching a fantastic article on the subject. The authors - Wendy D. Roth and Jal D. Mehta illustrate this effect by using two case studies of lethal school shootings. They also introduce methodological strategies to manage potential biases that may lead to contradictory testimony.
Really interesting article, and I definitely agree that the lineup identification method is unreliable. Thankfully we have DNA testing now that can eliminate the chances of the wrong person ending up behind bars.
I haven't heard about it. Will let you know after reading this.
