Hello everybody!
My question is how closely do the police work with forensic psychologists when they come across a potentially mentally ill criminal?
Is there a particular rule set that Forensic Psychologists have to follow and keep in mind while working on these cases?
Although it's been a few years since I worked as a forensic psychologist, I don't believe forensic psychologists generally assist the police in working with those who are mentally ill. Most often, forensic psychologists interact with the defendant once they are already charged as part of the legal process.
Correctional psychologists may assist at the jail/prison the defendant is being held at.
Police psychologists may provide some assistance, but many police psychologists primarily focus their work on the officers rather than individuals who are being arrested.
