Can bipolar people tell if they're bipolar?
That's a really interesting question, and I can imagine it applying to lots of conditions.
Here we would use the term insight, to what extent do people with bipolar disorder have insight into the nature of their disorder.
The answer is more complicated, and depends in what stage and state the person is in.
I managed to find an article on this very subject that may help elucidate matters.
Patients with Bipolar II showed significantly lower levels of insight than those with Bipolar 1.
Those with Bipolar II showed less insight into the their own bipolar, need for treatment and the social effects of the illness.
In patients with symptomatic bipolar insight is lessened than in patients with remitted bipolar disorder.

It is not common because bipolar disorder is hard to diagnose due to it's Symptoms usually get mixed with other mental illnesses. The distinguishing Symptoms are mania and extreme mood swings.
