I believe that a lot of people these days suffer from Dysthymia. I mean, the three most common causes are something we all deal with and experience maybe on a daily basis.
I think it was Amedeo Giorgi who suggested in the 90s that if you are not depressed you are out of touch with reality. I think one must remember that psychopathology is not an either/or diagnosis. There are degrees of psychopathology. I am quite sure there are a great many high-functioning people out there suffering from Dysthymia.
@ayesha naymat Pleasure. I had the privilege of meeting him when he visited Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa, in the early 90s, I think. It is an utterance that has stayed with me all through the years.
@ayesha naymat He was both interesting and intelligent, but I think it was the truth of what he uttered that allowed it to stay with me all these years. If we consider that depression, psychologically, is related to unprocessed or unmourned/unacknowledged losses, the statement speaks volumes about need for a collective grief process if humanity is not to dissolve into a permanent state of low grade depression, and after the last two years, the need may be even more pressing.
Thanks for sharing. Interesting that while not a clinical term, there may still be a recognised mental illness called 'high-functioning depression'. It'll be interesting to see if the next DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual) adds this diagnosis.
These things are often on a spectrum so it wouldn't surprise me if it does become recognised as a condition in its own right.
Brings to mind The late comic actor Robin Williams and the multi-faceted nature of depression.
@Daniel Sumner indeed Robin Williams was the known example of high functioning depression. But there are way too many hidden depressive people around us,we don't know about them at all. So, we should be kind to everyone because we never know what are they feeling.
