PTSD symptoms are categorized into four (4):
1. Intrusive memories: symptoms include
a. Repeated, involuntary distressing memories of the traumatic events.
b. Flashbacks of the traumatic events
c. Upsetting dreams or nightmares about traumatic events.
d. Severe emotional distress to things that remind you of the traumatic events.
2. Avoidance: symptoms include
a. Avoid thinking or talking about the traumatic events.
b. Avoiding people, places, activities, or situations and objects that may trigger or remind you of the traumatic events.
3. Alterations in thinking and mood: symptoms include
a. Having negative thoughts about yourself, other people, or the world.
b. Being hopeless about your future.
c. Having difficulty maintaining close relationships.
d. Finding it difficult to experience positive emotions.
4. Alterations in physical and emotional reactions (also known as arousal symptoms): symptoms include
a. Difficulty sleeping
b. Difficulty concentrating
c. Irritability, angry outbursts, or aggressive behaviors.
d. Being easily startled or frightened.
